Introduction & Background
Located in Calgary, Alberta and reporting to the Team Leader, Commercial and Operational Systems, the Senior Operational Systems Analyst will work as part of the Operational Systems team, specializing in OSI PI database infrastructures. This role will support a variety of critical and mission critical operational systems and the clients of those systems.
The Senior Operational Systems Analyst will be responsible for the maintenance, support, configuration and optimization of the Pi Data Historian. Work will be performed as part of a team supporting SCADA, hydraulic models, Electronic Flow Measurement, field applications, Compressor Station Workstations and HMI_SCADA Workstations. The Operational Systems team also works closely with the Commercial Systems Team, supporting the gas management system as well as commercial and operational data.
The role requires intermittent travel to field locations, meetings and vender sites, <10%, and participation in the 24 hour on-call rotation with other team members (average: 1 week every 5 -7 weeks).

  • Lead and/or participate in the analysis, configuration, modifying, testing, implementation, documentation and training of system functionality.

  • Design / modify SCADA displays and reports, keeping with industry best practices for control room management.
  • Configure and commission data points for new / modified facilities or data requirements.
  • Collaborate and partner with other technical and business groups to provide the best overall solutions for the company and to ensure quality delivery.
  • Ensure the PI data historian is operational and accurate in its calculations:
    • Design, develop, implement, configure, and maintain OSI PI systems such as ACE, AF, Process books, Datalink, PI-SMT, OPC interfaces.
    • Design, specify, deploy, install, configure, OSI PI system related software in concert with new and existing development projects.
    • Configure, test, and monitor OSI PI interface protocols such as Modbus, OPC, TCP/IP and XML.
    • Design and troubleshoot using Microsoft Scripting languages (i.e. VBScript, VBA, DOT NET, C Sharp, etc.).
    • Understand the data that all the systems use.
    • Responsible for the support of the interfaces to and from the PI Data Historian i.e.; SCADA/GMS/SAP.
    • Lead the training of peers and business users.
    • Provide historical data retrievals to different business units for troubleshooting and analysis.
    • Ensure PI has the most accurate data available and any necessary data updates are completed quickly and accurately.
  • Provide assistance in the area of SCADA and Alarm Management with a focus on continued improvement though Alarm rationalization and its full implementation.
  • Back-up and on call support for EFM and Hydraulic Model.
  • Follow standards and best practices in the delivery and maintenance of systems.
  • Ensure that the hardware is properly maintained and operating below any thresholds that might cause problems.
  • Create processes and procedures to ensure that the system is operating accurately and reliably.
  • Work with others on the Operational Systems Team to cross train and be able to understand other operational systems.
  • Understand the business that the systems support and how the data is used in the daily business of operating a gas pipeline.
  • Work with others in Gas Control to cross train and understand system operations.
  • Work inter-group technical initiatives.
  • Enable offline-online information exchange.
  • Support Gas Control with respect to Work Capacity and Operational Planning initiative.
  • Responsible for file backup, maintenance and consistency.
  • Follow IS model for Change Management.
  • Recommend preferred solutions with alternatives and complete cost/benefit analysis.
  • Identify the appropriate business and IS parties to involve when dealing with both new requirements and existing issues.
  • Understand business priorities and identify critical requirements.

  • Create project schedules/plans and identify milestones in conjunction with the business requirements.
  • Responsible for management of contractor, system integrator, or vendor work from time to time.
Essential Skills:
  • Post-secondary education (degree or diploma) in Computer Science, Engineering or a related discipline or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience.
  • Experience with OSI PI Data Historian is essential.
  • Experience with pipeline control systems is essential.
  • Experience with protocols and scripting languages.
  • Specific knowledge and experience in any or all of the following types of systems is an advantage: pipeline SCADA, pipeline hydraulic models, HMIs, data historians, electronic flow measurement, and gas management systems.
  • An understanding of the gas and pipeline industries, technology lifecycle, process, and change management.
  • An understanding of SCADA communication to field metering, control and communication devices.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with business partners, internal and external technical resources, project and technology managers.

  • Technology experience that could be an asset includes: Honeywell Experion, Gregg Engineering WinTran & WinFlow, Bristol and Modbus and devices, distributed systems.
